Welcome to HYSTA (Hua Yuan Science and Technology Association)!

Since its founding in 1999, HYSTA has grown to become the largest non-profit Chinese professional association in Silicon Valley.

I personally have benefited immensely from the guidance and advice of mentors throughout my career. HYSTA attracted me because it creates a forum to make this process more accessible to the community at large. So, when asked to serve as President, I found it to be both an honor and a challenge.

HYSTA continues to evolve as an organization, from our initial focus on entrepreneurship, starting a business from the ground up, to now include leadership training for those climbing the corporate ladder. The importance of leadership, particularly the ability to lead in global and multi-cultural markets, cannot be understated. A successful technology company can be built largely through the efforts of a few entrepreneurs, but maintaining and growing that business on a global stage requires many strong leaders throughout the organization.

The need for more and better leaders has become the yardstick of our own success as individuals and as an ethnic group. For instance, more Chinese professionals are parlaying technical aptitude into executive management positions. This transition from contributor to leader is not always easy, particularly for first generation immigrants, and I learned many lessons the hard way.

The need for global leadership skills is acute in China. Chinese technology companies are now competing in global markets against international companies. If they are to successfully navigate multinational waters, they will need to attract and develop leaders that are versed in international business practices and standards. These qualities are also demanded by the large number of international companies that continue to expand into China.

HYSTA is actively involved in helping Chinese professionals of all levels develop and hone these entrepreneurship and leadership skills. This is reflected immediately in the theme of the 2006 Annual Conference, which is "Innovation and Leadership." The past year was highlighted by a number of other successful events, including the Entrepreneur Boot Camp and Executive Summits in Pebble Beach and Beijing. Our frequent Distinguished Speakers series continue to attract industry luminaries and capacity crowds.

We have benefited greatly from those who blazed the trail before us, who have graciously contributed to our programs and leadership teams. We are also deeply indebted to our sponsors and volunteers, who make this all possible. On behalf of the HYSTA Board of Directors and Management, I would like to thank you for being HYSTA family . I am certain that you will find it a personally and professionally rewarding experience.
